"David Polen worked diligently at his craft with extraordinary discipline and patience, and he openly shared his worldly wisdom and fatherly advice. We all learned a great deal from him." - Stan C. Moss, CEO, Polen Capital
In 1979, David Polen founded Polen Capital to provide financial management services to high-net worth individuals and family trusts. Ten years later, Polen Capital launched its flagship Focus Growth strategy. David built the Investment Strategy on his belief—drawn from the philosophy of Benjamin Graham—that a concentrated portfolio of the highest-quality businesses with unfettered earnings growth would provide a Margin of Safety because share prices, over time, generally follow earnings growth.
David learned early in his career to ignore the daily price fluctuations of the stock market and focus instead on the strength, stability and durability of the underlying businesses. His hold discipline was the same as his buy discipline every day—he added a new holding only when it met his criteria of fair valuation and stable, sustainable, above-average earnings growth and only sold them when only they no longer met that criteria.
David lived by two mantras: 1) "it shouldn't be that hard" and 2) "forward thinking should always be in the context of the next ten years."
"David Polen was a great investor, a tireless mentor and a close friend." - Dan Davidowitz, CIO & Portfolio Manager
"As stewards of our clients' assets, we will continue to do what we have always done—add value by developing and managing prudent, wealth-creating investment strategies." - Stan C. Moss, CEO, Polen Capital
Today we continue to follow the same philosophy as our Founder, avoiding complicated situations and focusing on the long term. We simply seek to own the best companies and let them do the hard work of growing their earnings over time.
Polen Capital began a significant transformation in 2003 when Stan Moss and Damon Ficklin were hired to elevate the operations, research capabilities and direction of the firm. When Dan Davidowitz came on board in 2005, he and Damon assumed much of the investment research responsibilities from David Polen. In 2007 Dan became Portfolio Manager; Damon became co-Portfolio Manager in 2012.
A new era in the growth and evolution of Polen Capital began in 2012 when an employee group, led by Stan Moss, Dan Davidowitz and Damon Ficklin assumed majority ownership of the firm.
The new management team is committed to continuing to seek value-adding strategies to provide our clients with opportunity to participate in the growth of many of the world’s greatest businesses. This initiative led to the additions of our Global Growth strategy in 2015 and our International Growth strategy in 2016. Both of these strategies take the same fundamental approach as our flagship Focus Growth strategy.
As we look to the future of Polen Capital, we are committed to continuing to serve our growing client base with the service and strategies they need to succeed in the dynamic global equity environment.
"Growth is not a strategy; it's an outcome of a well-executed strategy." - Stan C. Moss, CEO, Polen Capital
With an eye on the future, we are focused on continuing to build the firm with a passionate core of professionals who bring a sense of commitment and teamwork to our culture. Many members of our team have participated in collegiate sports, served important roles in the U.S. military, or established impressive, dedicated careers in the investment management industry.
Polen Capital provides a growth-oriented environment where talented individuals are given the resources and support they need to focus on actively managing our clients' assets for optimal long-term growth.
As our business grows, the Polen Capital Investment Team will stay true to its legacy of focusing on the business—not the stock—with a long-term, disciplined approach to each investment.
With a proud past and a dynamic future, Polen Capital is committed to continuing a long and successful history that few investment firms can match.*
Institutional investors, as well as their consultants, rely on Polen Capital to manage their assets for long-term growth, with discipline and prudence.
Forward-thinking should always be in the context of the next ten years.
